TROUBLESHOOTING:  Video Issues

Q.  I can’t see my picture on the view screen.

A.  There are three simple things you can do:

  1. Make sure that your screen settings (camera, microphone/audio, macromedia) are checked off properly.
  2. Make sure that your camera is not in use by another program.
  3. Make sure that you haven’t minimized your screen while visiting another forum office (your camera may be open in your own forum office).

Q.  The quality of my picture needs improvement.

A.  Refer to your camera’s program settings to change hue, contrast, focus, and color.  Good lighting is essential.  Make sure that your face is well lit with a desk light either next to or behind your camera.

TROUBLESHOOTING:  Audio & Microphone Issues

Q. I am having trouble with my audio.

A.  Here are some things you can to do fix or improve your audio:

  1. Make sure that you have an internet chat headset in place of your computer speakers.
  2. Make sure that the 2 cords from the headset are in the correct location (cables usually color coded).
  3. Check to see if your headset has a volume control option on the cord.
  4. Make sure that your screen settings are checked off properly (volume and echo).
  5. You may need to check your audio settings on your computer.

Q. How do I check the audio settings on my computer..

A.  To check your audio settings on your computer, follow these steps:

  1.  Go to Start
  2.  Click on Settings
  3.  Click on Control Panel
  4.  Double-click on Sounds & Audios
  5.  Click on Audio
  6.  Go to Sound Playback
  7.  Click on Volume
  8.  Set Volume Control halfway
  9.  Go to Microphone and make sure mute is checked
  10.  Return to Audio tab
  11.  Go to Sound Recording
  12.  Click on Volume
  13.  Set Volume Control halfway
  14.  Go to microphone and make sure microphone is selected (not mute)

Q.  I am having trouble with my microphone.

A.  Make sure that your screen settings are checked off properly.  You may also need to check your sound settings on your computer:

  1. Go to Start
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Control Panel
  4. Double-click on Sounds & Audios
  5. Click on Voice
  6. Go to Voice recording
  7. Click on volume
  8. Check volume under microphone and make mute function is off

Q.  I hear an echo with my guest or I can hear myself in my headset.

A.  The sound quality on the forum is affected by every participant’s sound hardware.  For example, two or three people are interacting without difficulty, and feedback emerges when a new person enters the forum. You can mute that person’s audio (audio button in the VideoTalk screen) while instructing that person to:

  1. Place the cursor over his/her picture and right click
  2. Scroll to settings
  3. Click on microphone icon
  4. Check on reduce echo then click and drag volume tab to about 30- 40%.

If this doesn’t help, make sure that the audio and microphone settings are correct (office configuration) or perform a sound hardware test:

  1. Go to control panel
  2. Double click on Sounds & Audios
  3. Click on Voice Tab
  4.  Scroll down to take hardware test and follow instructions. Keep in mind that your sound playback volume can not be completely turned off.

Q.  My guest doesn’t have a camera but is using a headset, but I can’t hear him.

A.  Your guest still needs to click on the PLUS (+) sign on their VideoTalk view screen and do his screen settings.  You should see your guest’s name in their VideoTalk view screen once this is activated.  Remember that a headset with a microphone (like the myforum2 Premium Internet Headset) is best for optimal performance.

TROUBLESHOOTING:  Connection Issues

Q.  My video and audio are not in synch with each other.

A.  The video / audio connection may take a few seconds for you and your guest to be in synch with each other.  Live video stream uses quite a bit of memory and may narrow the band width.

Q.  How does myforum2 work with wireless computers?

A.  A wireless connection from any participant’s computer may cause a noticeable delay if the signal strength varies during the call.

Q.  What are some of the things that may affect my connection quality?

A.  The quality of the connection depends on a few things, such as:

  1. The bandwidth and the computer capabilities of each person that participate in the call.
  2. The time of day (broadband connections are typically shared within a neighborhood.
  3. The geographic location of the server that is being used for transmitting data.
  4. Not enough RAM will cause a person’s video to freeze.

TROUBLESHOOTING:  Toolbar Issues

Q.  I click on “load document, share website +/or help” and they do not open.

A.  Pop-Up blocker is preventing them from opening.

Q.  With the load document function, I can’t open a Word doc.

A.  The files that can be uploaded by our system are: pdf, jpg, jpeg, gif, html, MS Word doc, Excel and Powerpoint.  There are two issues that have been identified:

  1. Internet Explorer may prevent your .doc files from opening. If this becomes problematic, we recommend downloading Mozilla Firefox as your web browser.
  1. Hold down the “ctrl” tab while double-clicking on the file in the text area.
